Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM)
A. ENTITY DESCRIPTION
Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) is the oldest and largest Spanish Technical University, with more than 4.000 faculty members, around 48.000 undergraduate students, and 6.000 postgraduates in 21 Schools of study. UPM’s Schools cover most of engineering disciplines, including Aeronautical. UPM, as a top-quality academic establishment, has a strong commitment to R&D and Innovation. It boasts over 200 Research Units and several Research Institutes and Technological Centres.
The Numerical Mathematics Group (NUMATH) of the School of Aeronautics, has over 20 years of experience in computational fluid dynamics. The group has developed during the last years its own simulations solvers based on a provably stable implementation of a high-order discontinuous Galerkin discretization of the Navier-Stokes equations. Current investigations include numerical simulations of highly complex industrial problems and the development of numerical algorithms for data and machine learning models in aerodynamics.
B. ROLE IN THE HERFUSE PROJECT
In collaboration with ADS and INTA, UPM will perform activities to contribute to the 20% weight reduction goal on the empennage by developing multidisciplinary models that are coupled in an MDO toolchain.
UPM will generate surrogates that can be used for a full design space exploration coupled with the high fidelity tools through flow simulator plugins that will be delivered to be coupled into the MDO environment. UPM will develop an adjoint optimization capability to optimize the final configuration of the rear fuselage, HTP, and VTP.
