DLR
A. ENTITY DESCRIPTION
DLR is the Federal Republic of Germany's research centre for aeronautics and space. We conduct research and development activities in the fields of aeronautics, space, energy, transport, security and digitalisation. The German Space Agency at DLR plans and implements the national space programme on behalf of the federal government. Two DLR project management agencies oversee funding programmes and support knowledge transfer.
DLR employs approximately 10000 people at 30 locations: Cologne (Headquarters and location of the Executive Board), Augsburg, Berlin, Bonn, Braunschweig, Bremen, Bremerhaven, Cochstedt, Cottbus, Dresden, Geesthacht, Göttingen, Hamburg, Hanover, Jena, Jülich, Lampoldshausen, Neustrelitz, Oberpfaffenhofen, Oldenburg, Rheinbach, Sankt Augustin, Stade, Stuttgart, Trauen, Ulm, Weilheim and Zittau. DLR also has offices in Brussels, Paris, Tokyo and Washington D.C.
B. ROLE IN THE HERFUSE PROJECT
In this project, DLR is maturing composite manufacturing and bonding techniques that reduce the cost and weight of primary aerostructures. Stiffeners will be consolidated using high performance tailored preforms to reduce material. In addition, innovative welding techniques will be developed to combine thermoset and thermoplastic carbon fiber reinforced plastics to maximize their performance.
Structural bonding will be taken to a higher technology level to bond stringers to a fuselage skin. This technology has the potential to be incorporated into complex fuselage geometries, increasing the overall use of composites.
In the field of aircraft design DLR is enhancing its multi-objective optimization to shorten development cycles and support faster design decisions for new aircraft with hybrid propulsion
